Your plants keep succumbing to the same soil-borne diseases year after year, no matter how carefully you rotate your crops. Wilting leaves, yellowing from the bottom up, plants that just give up halfway through the season. Sound familiar?

Grafting might be the answer you have been looking for. It is an advanced technique, sure, but it is absolutely achievable for home gardeners who are ready to level up their tomato game.

Why Graft Tomatoes?

Grafting is the process of joining two plants together: a top portion (called the scion) from a variety you love to eat, and a bottom portion (called the rootstock) that is bred for disease resistance and vigour.

The result? A plant that produces the delicious tomatoes you want, powered by a root system that laughs in the face of soil diseases.

Before you start, gather these materials:

The Splice Graft Method (Best for Beginners)

There are several grafting methods, but the splice graft (also called the slant cut method) is the simplest and most reliable for home gardeners. Here is the step-by-step process.

Step 1: Timing the Sow

Sow your rootstock seeds about three to five days before your scion seeds. The rootstock tends to grow a bit slower, and you want both stems to be roughly the same thickness (about 2 to 3 mm in diameter) when you graft.

Both plants should have about two to four true leaves when they are ready.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Clean everything. Sterilise your blade with rubbing alcohol. Have your grafting clips within reach. Work in a shaded, calm area out of wind and direct sun.

Step 3: Cut the Rootstock

Using your clean blade, cut the rootstock stem at a 45 degree angle, about 2 to 3 cm below the cotyledon leaves (seed leaves). Remove the top of the rootstock plant. You only want the root system and a short stump of stem.

Step 4: Cut the Scion

Cut the scion stem at a matching 45 degree angle, removing the root system. You want the top of the plant with its growing tip and true leaves.

Step 5: Join and Clip

Carefully align the cut surfaces of the rootstock and scion so the angles match and the stems are flush. Slide a grafting clip over the joint to hold everything together.

Heads Up: The cambium layers (the thin green layer just under the skin of the stem) need to make contact for the graft to take. If the stems are very different thicknesses, align one side so at least part of the cambium layers overlap.

Step 6: Into the Healing Chamber

This is the most critical phase. Place your grafted plants immediately into your humidity dome or healing chamber.

  • Day 1 to 3: Keep humidity at nearly 100%. No direct light. Temperature around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Mist the inside of the dome if it starts to dry out.
  • Day 4 to 5: Begin introducing a small amount of indirect light. Open the dome very slightly for a few minutes to start air circulation.
  • Day 6 to 8: Gradually increase light and ventilation. The plants may wilt slightly when you open the dome, but they should recover within an hour.
  • Day 8 to 14: Fully remove the dome. The graft should be healed and the plant growing actively.
Pro Tip: If a plant wilts badly when you open the dome, close it up again and give it another day. Rushing the hardening process is the number one cause of graft failure.

Step 7: Grow On

Once healed, treat your grafted tomatoes like any other tomato seedling. Pot up as needed and plant out into the garden when conditions are right.

One crucial detail: never plant the graft union below soil level. If the scion puts out its own roots below the graft, you lose all the disease resistance benefits of the rootstock.

Finding rootstock seed can be the trickiest part for Australian gardeners. Here are some options:

  • Stems too different in size. Aim for both stems to be within 0.5 mm of each other in diameter.
  • Rushing the healing. Patience during the humidity dome phase is everything.
  • Dirty tools. Sterilise your blade before every single cut.
